In December 2016, Enterprise Northern Ireland announced the launch of Enterprise Champions, a new initiative that will see Enterprise NI work with local MLAs from each major political party to champion the enterprise, microenterprise and small business sectors.
The Enterprise Champions initiative reflects Enterprise Northern Ireland ’s commitment to supporting the small business sectors that make up the backbone of the Northern Ireland economy, and the Champions have been selected from MLAs sitting on the Economy Committee, namely Steve Aiken (Ulster Unionist Party); Sinead Bradley (SDLP); Gordon Dunne (DUP); Dr Stephen Farry (Alliance) and Conor Murphy (Sinn Fein).
Gordon Gough, Chief Executive of Enterprise Northern Ireland, said: “We see this as an opportunity to have the special contribution of entrepreneurs, microenterprises and small businesses put at the heart of policy development. We welcome the input of our Champions in helping us promote entrepreneurship and push for more pro-enterprise business policies.
“We believe this to be a mutually beneficial relationship with local MLAs, sharing knowledge and expertise which in turn will help us work with the Minister to further develop policies.”
The dissolution of the Northern Ireland Assembly has meant that the Enterprise Champion initiative has had to be put on hold. However, given that the initiative firmly reflects Enterprise Northern Ireland’s commitment to supporting sectors which make up the backbone of the Northern Ireland economy, we look forward to re-launching the initiative once the new Assembly and Committees are in place after the March elections.
